Composite/White Fillings
A composite/tooth colored filling is used to repair a tooth that has decay, chips, cracks, fractures etc. The decayed or affected part of the tooth is removed and then filled with the composite resin.
There are a wide variety of filling materials available, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Composite fillings, along with silver amalgam fillings, are the most widely used today. Composite fillings are tooth colored, they can be closely matched to the color of you existing teeth, and are more aesthetically suited for use in front teeth and visible areas of the mouth.
As with most dental restorations, composite fillings are not permanent and may someday have to be replaced. They are very durable, and will last many years, giving you a long-lasting smile.
Our office is amalgam-free and we use composite fillings for all patients.
Procedure
Composite fillings are usually completed in one visit., depending on the number of fillings required. The first step is to remove the decayed or unsightly portion of the tooth while the area is numb. The tooth is then etched with a liquid or gel and a bonding agent is then applied. This will allow the composite resin to be placed in the prepared tooth. If they decay is near the nerve, a special medication will be applied for added protection. The filling is then trimmed and polished, leaving you with a beautifully sculpted, natural-looking restoration. Your tooth will be restored to its original shape and function.
It is normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold when composite fillings are first placed. This will subside shortly after your tooth acclimates to the new filling.
If your bite does not feel right a few days after the filling, please call our office so that we may schedule a quick adjustment.
